Dedicated to the memory of Marco Dees

Hello everyone,

It has been nearly five years since our brother died. Marco meant, and still means, a lot of
things to a lot of people. He was a son, an uncle, a cousin, a nephew, friend, climbing
partner, outdoorsman, philosopher, colleague, teacher and more. We still feel his loss
everyday, particularly when we think about the things we can no longer share with him. We
have had children, weddings, family gatherings; we have celebrated good times, and talked
and sympathised with each other during difficult times - and we have missed him all in all
these experiences.

We also miss him during small everyday things - I am sure everyone remembers laughing at
something ridiculous with Marco, because of how often this happened. We wish we could
laugh again whenever we see something that reminds us of him.

As we near this anniversary of his death once more, we would like to thank each and
everyone of you who contributed stories, pictures and videos to us via this website. We are
eternally grateful for all of your heartfelt memories, and for the compassion you have sent
our way. Marco lived in a number of different parts of the world throughout his life, and we
have been so appreciative of you all sharing your memories of him.

We would like to publish a book of these stories and pictures. This will give us something
tangible we can look at as a family. It will allow us and our parents to look at and read
through memories of Marco without needing to turn on a computer. Unfortunately, the
much-loved website compresses photographs quite a lot, which makes printing a good
quality book difficult.

We would like to ask any willing contributors to please submit high resolution copies of your
photographs to the following web address: https://photos.app.goo.gl/yUAoaNHrVrhyD4HR8
Having such a book, with photos it is possible to print large, would be a beautiful gift to
Marco’s family which we would be incredibly thankful for.

This will not be possible for some of the older photos, and we completely understand if you
would rather not reupload these pictures for whatever reason. If you would rather not have
your contribution printed at all in a hardcopy book, please let us know via this website or
through email.
Again, thank you so much.

With love and warm thoughts to you and your families,

Henrieke, Jonathan, Paul and Rachel
(Marco’s siblings)

Details of Vassar College Memorial Event September 27th 4 pm

Dear friends, we are so unspeakably sad to have to let you know that Marco died in a climbing accident on Sunday July 22 while descending 'Guide's Wall' in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming with Grace Mooney, at around 7 pm. Marco will be missed very much by his mum and dad Chrisjan and Anja, his nieces and nephews, and his brothers and sisters; Henrieke, Harrison, Jonathan, Lois, Paul, Rachel and Nathan. We all miss him so much as do his friends, colleagues and fellow climbers and nature lovers.

This site is a tribute to Marco Dees. Please share with us your photos and memories of any time you spent with Marco.  Even though any biography of Marco would need to be thousands of pages long to even approach being complete, we plan to create a hard copy of all shared here.

This site will also be used to share details of a funeral service in the UK and a memorial service in the USA.

He is much loved and will always be remembered.

We do not think Marco would have appreciate anyone giving flowers in his name, or to be the centre of anyone's grief. We think he would much rather have brought joy to anyone he possibly could. Marco was a donator to WaterAid, a charity which seeks to provide clean fresh water, adequate toilets and good hygiene to those in great need. He was also a supporter and member of Access Fund, which seeks to protect climbing access and the integrity of America’s outdoor climbing areas. We would ask that anyone who would normally wish to send flowers to a loved one please donate to these causes instead. Thank you.
